A small, maintained base is a better starting point than a sprawling building you cannot supply. Before expanding, understand three separate systems: building privilege, access through locks and crafting requirements. Use our Rust page for the chosen server’s details and rules; this guide does not assume a particular upkeep multiplier or wipe schedule.
Give the Tool Cupboard a protected home
The Tool Cupboard, usually called the TC, handles building privilege and upkeep. Put it somewhere protected and lock it. Teammates need to authorise at the cupboard; joining a team is not the same action. Watch for the building-privilege indicator when checking access. The official TC guide explains the distinction.
- Open the cupboard and read the resources required for upkeep. Supply every material shown, not only the material you collected most recently.
- Check the remaining protection time after adding a room or upgrading building pieces. A larger or differently built base can need a different supply.
- Plan a reserve that covers your next absence. Give one teammate clear responsibility for checking it, while keeping the inventory understandable to everyone.
- Remember that a separate building does not automatically inherit upkeep protection just because it is nearby. Check its own arrangement before leaving supplies inside.
A door needs a lock, and a lock needs a check
Fit a lock and verify that it is actually locked before you leave. Key locks can provide physical keys for friends; anyone carrying a usable key presents an access risk if it is lost. Avoid making or carrying unnecessary copies.
For a group, a Code Lock uses a four-digit code. Share it privately with the people who need entry, and have a teammate test the intended access while you are nearby. Door access and TC authorisation are separate checks. Changing one does not mean you have reviewed the other.
Create a simple arrival routine: enter, close the outside door, then move deeper inside. Leave enough room that people are not standing in an open doorway while sorting loot. Before logging out, walk the exit route and check each door you used.
Use the workbench to solve a specific need
A Level 1 Workbench supports crafting and unlocking items that require that tier. Place it where the team can reach it, then read the recipe’s materials, knowledge and workbench requirements. Owning ingredients alone does not satisfy every crafting requirement.
Choose your next unlock around the team’s immediate problem: replacing equipment, gathering more efficiently or defending the base. Read the current in-game costs before spending resources, because recipes and progression can change. Keep upkeep supplies separate from the pile you intend to spend on crafting.
End each session with a short handover: remaining upkeep, important access changes and what the crew is saving toward. Those three facts make it much easier for the next player to continue safely.
