Join Terraria and build a strong first-night routine

Connect to the right world, understand character rules, and turn early materials into a useful shared base.

Start on the Terraria page and choose the same regional world as your friends. Check whether the listing is open, which game build it uses and whether it asks for fresh characters. A Coming soon entry is awaiting launch.

Join through the game

  1. Use the game edition and version specified on the listing. A vanilla Terraria server and a tModLoader world are different setups; do not add mods unless the listing asks for them.
  2. From the title screen choose Multiplayer → Join via IP, then select the character permitted by the server’s rules.
  3. Enter the hostname shown on the listing. When prompted for a port, enter that listing’s game port, then supply a password if required.
  4. Confirm you have reached the intended world before moving supplies or starting a major build.

The joining sequence is covered in the official wiki’s server guide. Use current listing details rather than saving a port from an unrelated Terraria world.

Learn what the crafting menu is telling you

Recipes depend on the materials you carry and the crafting stations within reach. A missing recipe can mean you are too far from the work bench, not that the item is unavailable. Show a material to the Guide NPC’s crafting interface to explore what it can make. The crafting basics reference explains those relationships.

Give the crew a practical first goal

  • Gather wood, create basic work space, and establish a lit shelter the group can find. Keep room for storage and useful crafting stations.
  • Make a short exploration route with lighting and a way back. Return with useful materials instead of carrying everything into an unfamiliar deep cave.
  • Organise communal chests by purpose and agree what equipment can be borrowed.
  • Ask before summoning bosses or advancing major world progression. Other players may want to prepare or experience that milestone together.

The official getting-started guide covers early tools, shelter, inventory and exploration. Read it in small pieces as you encounter a new system; you do not need an endgame build plan to enjoy the first evening.

If you cannot connect, compare the server’s required build, your installed version and the exact error. For a character-rule question, ask staff before importing established equipment from another world.

Try a crafting diagnosis

Pick one item the group actually needs and inspect its recipe. Gather its materials, stand beside the required station and check the crafting list again. If it still does not appear, compare the exact ingredients and game setup rather than adding random furniture. Once you understand the problem, tell the next player what fixed it. This small exercise teaches a pattern you will reuse throughout progression and helps prevent the shared base from filling up with duplicate stations that nobody knows how to use.
