Choose an open world on the Factorio page. Check its game version, mod list and whether it uses Space Age before arranging a session. A listing marked Coming soon is not ready for players.
Match the factory before connecting
- Update or select the exact Factorio version specified by the server. Everyone needs a compatible, matching set of game content and mods.
- Open the multiplayer menu and choose Connect to address. Use the hostname and game port on the listing.
- If the server is publicly listed, you can also use Browse public games and search its exact name.
- Follow any mod synchronisation or restart prompt, then reconnect. Ask before adding extra mods or changing to an experimental release.
The official multiplayer reference explains the connection options and matching-version requirement. On a shared factory, reach the same build first; a website account does not replace the game’s access requirements.
Automate one small chain
A useful first exercise is ore → furnace → plates, then a small automated ingredient chain. Observe each machine before duplicating the line: does the drill have a resource to mine, does the furnace have input and fuel, and is there somewhere for its output to go? The official quick-start guide walks from early mining toward science production.
- Turn on Alt mode to make recipes and machine contents easier to read.
- Leave a walking route and expansion space around a new build. Ask which direction the shared factory is intended to grow.
- Check an idle machine’s status before adding more machines. A missing ingredient, fuel, power or blocked output needs a different fix.
- Choose a small job you can finish and explain: refilling fuel, supplying plates or extending one production line.
Trace a bottleneck backwards
A belt has two lanes. Which side receives an item and how another belt merges into it affects where that item can travel. Read the belt transport guide and test a small junction before extending it across the factory.
When the final machine is starved, walk upstream until you find the first missing input. When it is blocked, follow the output downstream. This habit is more useful than rebuilding the whole line at random.
Before major demolition or redesign, agree with the crew and confirm there is a usable save. Leave a brief handover in the community discussion so the next player knows what changed and what still needs work.
Leave an understandable handover
Give a new production line a plain explanation: what goes in, what comes out and what limits it today. If you stopped because of a missing technology or ingredient, say so. Ask another player to walk the line with you before expanding it; explaining your choices often reveals a reversed connection or an assumption you missed. Avoid removing someone else’s working setup during a quick experiment. Agree on the replacement plan first and keep the shared factory usable while it is being improved.
