Your First Catholic Mass: What to Expect

A practical starting point for visiting a parish, following the service, and knowing what to do when you are unsure.

Before you arrive

Find the parish’s own website and check the current Mass time. Arrive a little early, silence your phone, and choose a seat where you can follow comfortably. If you need accessible seating or are worried about bringing children, the parish office can explain what is available. There is no need to pretend you already know every response.

Follow the shape of the Mass

The Mass has two principal parts: the Liturgy of the Word, with Scripture readings and a homily, and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Introductory rites gather the assembly; concluding rites send it out. Listening, prayer and silence are part of participation. The USCCB Order of Mass is a useful overview.

When people stand, sit or kneel

Follow as you comfortably can. A printed guide or missal may help, but it is also fine to listen instead of trying to find every page. If a posture is difficult for you, remain in a position you can manage. The people around you are there to worship, not to assess how quickly you learn the sequence.

At Communion

Being welcome at Mass is distinct from being prepared to receive Holy Communion. If you are not Catholic, are unsure about your preparation, or need guidance about returning, remain in your place and pray; speak with the priest about your situation. Read the USCCB explanation of the Eucharist and Communion for the Church’s guidance.

Afterward

If you would like to return, check the parish bulletin and introduce yourself when there is an appropriate opportunity. One helpful question is: “I’m new here—who can I speak to about learning more?” You do not have to settle every question on your first visit.
