Join an Among Us crew: private regions and better first rounds

Understand the unofficial Impostor setup, select the same region as your friends, and make meetings more useful.

This guide covers Impostor, an unofficial, open-source implementation of the Among Us server. Check the current server details in this guide or ask staff to confirm that your chosen Among Us listing uses Impostor. This is separate from Innersloth’s official public regions. A listing marked Coming soon is not accepting players.

Get the region setup from the organiser

Impostor requires a compatible client version and a client configured for that server. Check the project’s compatibility information and the event instructions first. Do not assume a normal official-region lobby code will find a private lobby, or that every console and mobile setup is supported.

  1. Open the chosen listing and get its tested private-region configuration from the organiser. Use the version and platform instructions they publish.
  2. Follow the appropriate section of the Impostor client-setup page. Depending on the platform, this can use an Open in Among Us link or a generated region file.
  3. If using the Windows file method, close the game, back up any existing regionInfo.json, and follow the tool’s folder and filename instructions. Do not leave a browser-added “(1)” in the filename.
  4. Launch the game and choose the same private region as the host. Then enter the lobby code they share. The region selection and the lobby code are both important.
  5. To return to official play, switch the game’s region back to the appropriate official region.

Agree on house rules before the first round

For a relaxed first session, have the host explain the map, enabled roles and discussion rules. If you use Discord voice, agree when players should be silent and keep information learned after elimination out of the living players’ discussion. These are suggested group habits, not settings imposed by this guide.

Make meetings about observations

Crewmates work toward their task objective and identify Impostors, while Impostors use deception and sabotage. Innersloth’s how-to-play overview explains those goals. When reporting, give the room, the route you took and what you actually saw. Separate “I saw this” from “I suspect this,” and allow the accused player time to answer.

If nobody can reach the private region, send the organiser the platform, client version and error text. Repeatedly changing the lobby code will not resolve a version or region-configuration mismatch.

Separate a connection problem from a lobby problem

If the private region does not appear, revisit the platform-specific setup before changing the lobby code. If the region appears but only one person cannot join, compare that person’s client version with the host’s instructions. If everyone reaches the region but a code fails, confirm that the host still has that lobby open and has copied the current code. Send the organiser a screenshot of the error and say which of those stages failed. Keep the lobby code within the invited group when the session is private.
