Minecraft on Paper: plugins, client mods and resource packs

Understand what runs on the server and what belongs in your own game installation.

This guide explains Paper servers and how their plugins differ from client mods. Check the current server details in this guide and confirm your chosen server uses Paper before following these instructions.

Paper is managed by the server team

Paper extends the server through plugins installed by its operators. Those plugin files belong in the server’s plugins folder; copying them into your client is not an installation step for joining. Paper’s documentation also distinguishes these plugins from Fabric and Forge mods, which Paper does not load. Paper’s plugin guide.

Start with the normal client

Use a normal Java Edition installation matching the version staff lists. Do not install a random modpack just because the server uses Paper. If a particular setup is needed, the server’s own instructions should tell you what it is.

  • Keep optional client experiments in a separate launcher installation or mod-manager profile.
  • Check server rules before using gameplay-affecting client tools; technical compatibility does not establish permission.
  • If a modified client fails, compare it with a clean matching installation before adding more mods.

Treat resource-pack prompts separately

Some servers offer resource packs when you connect. Minecraft’s multiplayer guide describes downloading required packs as part of joining. Read the prompt and confirm that you are connecting to the intended server before accepting. This does not mean Northern Fleet currently requires a pack. Minecraft multiplayer reference.

Ask about the feature you need

Home commands, land claims, shops and protection systems depend on the actual plugins and settings installed. Do not assume a command works because another Paper server has it. Check the server’s instructions or ask the crew.

If a pack fails or a feature behaves unexpectedly, open a private support ticket with the server name, client version, exact message and whether the problem also occurs in a clean installation.
