Minecraft shaders: should you choose OptiFine or Iris and Sodium?

Choose a shader setup for Java Edition, understand where the shader pack fits, and find the right installation guide.

For a new Minecraft Java shader setup, our starting recommendation is Fabric with Iris and Sodium, provided compatible releases exist for your game version and chosen packs. Start with the joining version on our Minecraft page. Your shader pack is a separate choice: Complementary Reimagined is a useful place to begin.

What each name actually means

  • Fabric is a mod loader: it provides the environment in which compatible mods run.
  • Sodium is a rendering and performance mod. It improves how the client draws the world; installing it alone does not add a shader pack.
  • Iris is the shader loader used alongside Sodium. It runs compatible shader packs that change lighting and other visual effects.
  • OptiFine combines optimisation, shader support and additional visual features in one mod.
  • Complementary Reimagined is a shader pack: it supplies a particular look for a compatible shader loader.

Why start with Iris and Sodium

This combination suits a modern Fabric setup because its roles are clear and its official installer handles the two rendering mods together. Use the Iris download page and our step-by-step Iris, Sodium and Complementary installation guide. If you already have a modpack, follow its supported version and installation route before adding anything.

Iris aims to support many OptiFine shader packs, but that is not a promise that every pack, graphics device or rendering mod will work together. Check the pack’s own requirements and the Iris compatibility FAQ. Keep OptiFine out of the same Iris installation.

When OptiFine may fit your needs

Consider OptiFine when an existing setup or resource pack specifically depends on its features and supports your Minecraft version. Its feature list includes shader support, connected textures, dynamic lights and other visual options. Iris and Sodium alone do not promise to reproduce that whole feature set.

Check the official OptiFine downloads for the exact game version, whether a build is a preview, and any stated Forge compatibility. Keep a working profile while trying a different setup. Our plugins, client mods and resource packs guide explains how those pieces differ on a Paper server.

Choose the look, then test it

Complementary Reimagined keeps a recognisably Minecraft-like default style. The official page also explains Unbound, its more realistic default style; both remain configurable. Download the public pack from Complementary’s official site. A paid supporter tier is not required for this recommendation.

Compare setups using the same world, viewpoint, render distance and shader preset. Check smooth movement and visual correctness as well as the frame counter. Results depend on hardware, settings and the rest of your mods; there is no universal frame-rate winner promised here. If joining fails after changing versions, use our version-mismatch checklist before changing more graphics settings.
