Valheim updates and mods: a compatibility checklist

Check release branches, client updates and the server’s required mod setup without risking your saves.

If joining stops after an update, collect the message before making changes. Open the Valheim page and confirm which server you are trying to reach; another region may use a different setup.

Compare the release you are running

  1. Close the game and let your store finish any pending update.
  2. Note the version shown by your client and ask staff to confirm the server version.
  3. Check whether you opted into a test release. Use the branch specified for that server rather than switching branches at random.

Iron Gate offers Public Test builds separately from the default game and cautions that they can be less stable. The official crossplay FAQ explains the test options on Steam and Microsoft platforms.

Check the mod profile separately

Iron Gate does not officially support mods. Treat the base game version and your mod profile as two separate checks. Ask staff for the intended mod list and versions; an old profile can remain different even after the store updates the game. Iron Gate’s mod-support statement.

If staff asks you to test without mods, use a separate clean profile where your mod manager supports it. Keep a backup of your character and local worlds before changing a modded installation. Avoid opening a modded save in a different setup merely to test a connection.

Repair files only when needed

Steam users can use Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files to check the base installation. This does not establish that a mod collection matches the server. Steam’s verification guide.

If it still fails, open a private support ticket with your platform, version, test-branch status, mod profile and exact error. Staff can then compare your setup with the server.
