Start strong in Valheim: food, rest and recovering your gear

Prepare for a first expedition, manage stamina in a fight, and make a calm plan when you need to recover lost equipment.

A good Valheim expedition begins at home. Food, preparation and a route back matter as much as the weapon in your hand. Check our Valheim page for the world you are joining, then ask where the crew is settling and which stage of progression you are sharing.

Make a small camp work for you

Start with nearby resources and build a modest place to organise supplies. Read the raven’s tutorials as they appear, and check newly available recipes when you collect unfamiliar materials. Keep food, basic tools and spare equipment in clearly labelled storage. You want a useful camp before you want an impressive hall.

Eat before leaving. Food affects your available health and stamina, and different meals support different needs; the official gameplay FAQ explains why it matters even though simply going without food does not make you starve. Compare the values and duration shown on your food instead of judging a meal by its name.

Leave with food and Rested ready

  1. Fill your available food slots with different useful foods. For early exploration, choose a mixture that leaves room for both surviving a hit and moving or attacking.
  2. At night, use an eligible bed to sleep. If blocked, follow the message about shelter, a nearby fire, being wet or nearby enemies; a bed cannot simply be used to sleep at any time. After waking, check that Rested is active. Its description explains the health and stamina regeneration benefit; plan around the timer shown in your game.
  3. Check food and status timers, tool condition, and your route back. Take replacement food for a longer outing.
  4. Keep a small recovery supply at home: food, a spare weapon and useful protection. Do not carry every spare item into the same dangerous place.

You can also consult a community-hosted reference of the game’s own food, Rested and death tutorial text. Use your installed game’s descriptions when checking exact effects.

Spend stamina deliberately

Use a quiet encounter to practise the block and dodge controls shown in your settings. Watch the enemy’s wind-up, respond, then attack when you have an opening. Valheim’s official overview describes combat built around dodging and blocking. Avoid spending your entire stamina bar chasing an enemy when another threat is nearby.

Fight where you can see and move. Retreat toward familiar terrain, pause between exchanges and avoid taking a new biome lightly just because its edge is close to home. If ordinary enemies repeatedly overwhelm you, revisit food, equipment and preparation before pushing farther.

Recover with a plan

  1. After a death, identify the location and what killed you. Stop for food and preparation before attempting the return.
  2. Use your spare gear if the route needs protection, while leaving space for what you hope to recover.
  3. Ask a teammate to escort you or draw enemies away if the site remains dangerous. Agree on the route before leaving.
  4. Once you reach the grave and recover equipment, withdraw to a safe place to sort and re-equip it. You do not need to finish the original expedition immediately.

Death penalties and other rules depend on world modifiers. Check the world’s settings with the crew rather than assuming a fixed loss or recovery rule. The official server guide documents configurable death, combat and resource settings.
